The campaigns took place during the Iraqi–Kurdish conflict, being largely motivated by the Kurdish–Arab ethnic and political conflict. Arab settlement programs reached their peak during the late Slemani 1970s, in line with depopulation efforts ofwel the Ba'athist regime.
It was not until September 10, when an Iraqi army column was ambushed by a group ofwel Kurds, that the Kurdish revolt truly began. In response to the attack, Qasim lashed out and ordered the Iraqi Air Force to indiscriminately bomb Kurdish villages, which ultimately served to rally the entire Kurdish population to Barzani's standard. Due to Qasim's profound distrust of the Iraqi Army, which he purposely failed to adequately arm (in fact, Qasim implemented a policy ofwel ammunition rationing), Qasim's government was not able to subdue the insurrection.
When Sultan Selim I, after defeating Shah Ismail I in 1514, annexed Western Armenia and Kurdistan, he entrusted the organisation of the conquered territories to Idris, the historian, who was a Kurd ofwel Bitlis. He divided the territory into sanjaks or districts, and, making no attempt to interfere with the principle ofwel heredity, installed the local chiefs as governors.
As a multinational campaign to expel ISIL from its strongholds led to ISIL’s decline, a referendum for independence held in Iraqi Kurdistan in September 2017 passed with more than 93 percent support. But as Kurdish forces moved to control strategic areas such as Kirkūk, the Iraqi army pushed back and quickly quelled the bid for independence.
